Be a superhero, wear a mask. We all know how important and necessary it is to wear a mask in such times when the Corona virus is almost all around us. Unfortunately, wearing a mask on a daily basis can cause skin problems, including flare-ups in chronic skin conditions.

Acne is a chronic skin disorder that affects millions of teenagers and adults, and you have probably heard of it. But have you heard about Maskne? It is a type of acne caused by the increased wearing of masks due to the Covid-19 and as a pandemic precaution. This term is coming up in a lot of self-care blogs and in health magazines referencing a type of acne that develops due to friction of the mask material against the skin.

What is Maskne?
Maskne is a form of acne that causes breakouts on the jaw, cheeks, nose, chin, and around the mouth in the areas covered by a face mask. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, athletes who wore helmets were the most likely to contract the disease.

What causes Maskne?

Humidity:
Breathing into a mask in the heat and humidity is difficult enough on its own, but with the added temperature and moisture in the air during the summer months, people are much more likely to break out.

Makeup:
Wearing makeup under a mask leads to a higher chance of catching Maskne.

Cold/dry weather:
During the fall and winter seasons, skin is more likely to be naturally dry, and the pressure from the mask can remove the skin’s natural oil barrier more quickly. This can cause folliculitis, a bacterial infection of the hair follicles, as well as clogging of the surrounding pores with shedding dry skin cells.

Stress:
Stress is also seen as a cause in the increase of Maskne due to the upset in the hormonal balance, Maskne gets worse.

How to treat Maskne?

Simplify your skincare routine:
Try to simplify your skin care products as much as you can. The more products you apply under the mask, the higher the risk to catch Maskne.

Wash your masks:
In case you are using a reusable mask, do not forget to clean it/wash it.

Change your mask:
If you’re using disposable masks, you should use a new mask every day. Reusing a disposable mask is not a good idea

Skip makeup:
We all understand its necessary to look presentable and nice but try skipping makeup to avoid Maskne.

Be conscious:
If you notice irritation or discomfort, try finding a safe place where you can remove your mask and relax for a while.

See a dermatologist:
In case the Maskne worsens, do seek professional help.
